No 74 Wincheap (Wincheap House) Grade II* (formerly No 33). [TR 14345721]. Ground and 2nd floors red brick, 1st floor tile-hung. 2 half-hipped gables with casement windows. Other windows are sashes with glazing bars intact. 2 small bay windows on the 1st floor resting on carved brackets, replacing earlier oriel windows. 2 larger bay windows with wooden shutters on the ground floor. 16th century door of 16 panels with early 19th century rectangular fanlight added between the brackets of the over- hanging 1st floor and containing ogee-shaped divisions. (1-2) Early 17th century. (3)

The Canterbury UAD states that 74 Wincheap was previously an inn called the Royal George.
At one time the Royal George was numbered No. 82 'next to old burial ground'. There is now a garage on the site (Tyre Services).

In 1846 the directory listed Mr G Pentecost as innkeeper and he was still there in 1848. In 1882, as No. 74 Wincheap Street, the innkeeper was Mrs Elizabeth Ann Woodford and in 1888 E Savage. In 1887 the Royal George was purchased by Rigden (brewer) and between 1900 and 1903 Mrs Marsh was innkeeper.

The Royal George closed as an inn in 1907 and for some time the building became a popular restaurant - Michael's. In 1992 the building appears to be unoccupied.

The Royal George was listed in the 1692 Licences List as THREE MARINERS. The Billeting List in 1693 gave the inn two soldiers. The 1865 directory listed G Pentecost as innkeeper. In 1905 it was Mrs Mary A Marsh. (4)
