Description from record TR 15 NE 897:
In early October 1939 tenders were invited to erect an air-raid siren at St Martin’s Hill, in place of the one on the ‘Mental Hospital’ (St Martin’s Hospital). This was fixed on the back of the ‘cowl’ of St Martin’s (or ‘Quern’s’) Mill, and, later, wiring was installed for the siren to be operated from the nearby warden’s post (Post ‘C/2’) on Babs Hill. Louvers were fixed around the siren in December to prevent it freezing-up. Late in 1940 heating equipment was supplied. In May 1942 the siren was removed to a pole adjoining the aforesaid warden’s post which had by then been renumbered ‘C/2/3’.
