2. This gateway formerly led to Place House, the home of Margaret Roper, daughter of Sir Thomas More, and the Roper family, C16 red brick archway with crow stepped gable over containing a window of 3 arched lights (2 now blocked ) with brick mullions and a blocked circular opening above this. Large 4-centre arch with double wooden doors and brick hoof-mould over.

[TR 14345828] Gateway [NR] (Remains of). (1) The 16th or early 17thc red brick archway at entrance of Freeman's Brewery, St Dunstan's Street, Canterbury, was the gateway which led to the house of the Roper family. (2) Gateway as described. In fair condition. There are no remains of the house. AO/65/60/1-2. (3) A brick gateway with a four-centred arch. The lower parts of the jamb have been cut away to allow the wagons to enter more easily. Visited June 1951. Scheduled. (4) The Roper Gate, St Dunstan's Street. This gateway formerly led to Place House, the home of Margaret Roper, daughter of Sir Thomas More and the Roper family. C16 red brick archway. (5) The Roper Gate, St. Dunstan's Street, Grade II*.
