Monument details

HER Number:TQ 76 NW 33
Type of record:Findspot
Name:Unidentified iron object, possibly Roman, Cuxton

Summary

An egg shaped iron object was reportedly found in the 19th century embedded in clay. It was formed of an iron ring or belt with hemispherical pieces at each end. It was also said to have been covered with a series of belts of different widths, and ornamented with patterns and scroll-work. There was also evidence that it had originally been inlaid with copper foil and possibly also a thin layer of gold (gilt). At the time of its discovery it was thought that the artefact showed evidence of Roman workmanship, although a precise dating for the object is uncertain. The artefact was exhibited at the Society of Antiquaries in 1887 and is now thought to be held by the British Museum.

"An object of unknown use and of Roman workmanship found many years ago embedded in clay at Cuxton. Egg-shaped, 8" long, 5" in diameter, and formed of an iron ring or belt a little over 2" broad, with a hemispherical piece at each end, also of iron. At one end was fixed a short, thick stem and at the other are the remains of a three flanged arrangement. The whole is covered with a series of belts of different widths, ornamented with patterns and scroll-work, originally inlaid with copper foil and apparently gilt." Exhibited at Society Antiquaries, May 1887; since presented by Mr. A. White to the British Museum. (1) No further information. (2)
