Description from record TQ 94 SE 1:
[TQ 9889 4164] Moat [NAT] Singleton Manor [NAT] (1) An old moated manor house known to have been occupied and owned by Henry de Singleton prior to the reign of Richard II (1377-99). (2) A timber-framed house restored by brick still surrounded by a completemoat. (3) Singleton Manor, a large half-timbered private residence in excellent conditon, with central hall, end wings and double storey porch. Probably late C16. The moat is waterfilled and in good condition. There are ploughed down remains of a retaining bank along the E side. See GP's AO/61/195 /5 House from NW /6 " " SE The 25 inch AM has been revised. (4) Checked and correct. (5) Singleton Manor, Bucksford Lane, Great Chart. Grade 2*. C16 or earliertimber-framed building with tiled roof. The NW, or entrance front, hasplaster infilling on the first floor but its ground floor has been rebuilt in red brick. The end window bays project with hips over and probably their first floors once overhung on bressummmers, but these have been underbuilt in brick. Crow-stepped chimney breast. The windowbetween this and the south-westernmost window bay is a window of 3 tiers of 5 lights with wooden mullions and transoms. Small 2 storeyed gabled projection towards the NE end, containing a porch on the groundfloor with an archway having an obtusely-pointed head and carved spandrels, and the first floor oversailing above a cove and having a small oriel window with cover beneath it. Two windows of 5 lights between the porch and the chimney breast. Six casement windows, some of them with early C19 Gothic glazing. Two storeys and attics. One gabled dormer. The SE, or garden front, is half H-shaped. The NE arm of the half-H has the first floor of its SW face oversailing but is faced with stone rubble, with a narrow tile-hung gable above and a pentice to the NE. The SW arm of the half-H is tile-hung with a hip over and was probably added. The house retains its moat complete. Interior has late C16 plaster ceiling. Six carved relief heads over fireplace similar to Godinton and Court Lodge. (6,7) TQ 989 417 Singleton Manor, recorded in a list of recently scheduled sites compiled by the Moated Sites Research Group (8), but the site has not been scheduled. (9) Additional bibliography. (10,11) Singleton Manor. A large moated house, half-timbered with closely set uprights, the timbers mostly replaced on the ground floor. The hall is exceptionally large and has a fine late C16 plaster ceiling. (12)

A survey in 1977 suggested that the current structure is the second house on the site, given its location close to the bridge onto the island. A full description of the building was produced with a plan of the ground floor. (15)
