[TQ 77925153] Roman Villa [R] (Site of) (NAT) (1) A Roman bath house excavated in 1841 in a field known as the 'Slade' on the south bank of little Brishing Stream. Five rooms were uncovered but the excavation was not complete, assocated finds included samian pottery, fibulae, glass, iron fragments, coins and animal bones. Coins date the site 1st to 4th cent. but include 5 bronze and 1 silver British and Gaulish coins. (2)

Iron Age bronze coins found at the Slade and given to Evans by Roach Smith; one of each Evans type V:2 Evans type XI:12 Evans type XIII:5 Evans type XIII:6 (3)

The site is covered by tippings associated with the nearby quarries, and nothing of significance was noted. (4)

Finds in Maidstone Museum include fibulae, window glass and fragments of glass vessels, but no samian or coins. Allen (d) lists 5 bronze coins from the site: An Evans V:2 and Evans xiii:5, a xiii:6, and a xi:12, all in the B.M.; also a xi:12 in the Ashmolean. He also lists a silver stater of Dubnovellaunus. (Evans F.15) now in the B.M. (5)

The site is visible in aerial photos of 1999 and clearly extends further east than was excavated in 1841.
