Referred to as the Western Tudor Mound, the modern redevelopment initially intended to remove the mound. Once the vegetation had been cut back it became clear that the mound was composed of loose gravels and chalk and was too dangerous to investigate archaeologically. In the final development plan however, the Mound was included as a landscape feature, that would not be archaeologically impacted upon. The report concludes that there is no evidence to date it to the Tudor period and that it was had probably formed as a result of the stockpiling of soil from quarrying, or even terracing for the current Abbey building of 1833 [1].
