(TQ 45754838) Broxham Manor (NR) (site of) (1) At Broxham, Edenbridge, there is 'a fine example of a homestead moat in perfect condition, rectangular in shape and well filled with water from a streamlet. Its size is about 270 by 230 ft., the moat being nearly 50 ft. wide.' (2) In 1270 licence was granted to have a chapel at the manor of Broxham in Westerham. (3) In 1703, the gatehouse and old hall were pulled down, and the rest of the building was probably demolished when in 1771, a new house is mentioned as newly-built, probably that now standing near the moat. (4) A trial of 1305 mentions the park of Broxham. A licence to enclose the park of the Manor of Broxham (TQ 44 NE 157) was issued 41 Ed III (1367-8) (5,6) The moat, as described by Authority 2, is in excellent condition. The enclosed area is under turf and shows no traces of buildings. Published survey (25') correct. For the probable extent of the park, see OS 6'.
