Summary

The upper and lower stones of a Romano-British quern of 'pudding stone' conglomerate, are recorded as being found in Mr. Robert Cutburn's garden, part of 'Orlepitt's', Church Street, Maidstone. The date and circumstances of the find are not known. 'Orlepitts' is shown on a map relating to Maidstone in 1650 as lying to the north of the plots of land on the north side of East Lane (now King Street).

The upper and lower stones of a Ro. quern of 'pudding stone' conglomerate, found in Mr. Robert Cutburn's garden, part of 'Orlepitt's', Church Street, Maidstone, are recorded as being in store in Maidstone Museum, but cannot be located. The date and circumstances of the find are not known. 'Orlepitts' does not appear on any maps or plans held at Maidstone Museum, County Records Office, Maidstone, or Chapter Library, Canterbury Cathedral. (1)
'Orlepitts' is however shown on a map relating to Maidstone in 1650. This lies to the north of the plots of land on the north side of East Lane (now King Street). (4) A thirteenth century survey of the Archbishop's manor of Maidstone includes ten acres in 'Ordlepit' in the demesne lands . (5)
