Roman Burials found A.D. 1937 [NAT] (1) A roadside burial group of the first half of the 2nd C., probably 130 A.D., was discovered by Mr. Murray, of Rochester Meadow, Sandling Road, in digging a trench in a field adjoining his house. The group comprised fragments of a red, two-handled cinerary urn containing a cremation, accompanied by a square glass bottle, a black platter of coarseware, a pale red vase and a samian cup or dish stamped Laxtucissa. The group is on loan to Maidstone Museum. (2) Add. ref. Found December, 1937. Samian cup stamped Laxtucisf. Date of burial C.120 A.D. (3) Add. ref. Early 2nd c. burial group. (4) "Roman burial group found in field behind 'Rochester Meadow'. Dated by Murray as A.D. 120. Pottery on loan to Maidstone Museum. [Sited by coords: Lat: 51 degrees, 18 feet, 10 inches, N. Long: 0 degrees, 31 feet, 6 inches E. - TQ 75545904 but this is probably an approximation to the O.S. published symbol.] (5) Mrs. Murray confirmed the siting as given by Authority 1. The glass bottle is on display in Maidstone Museum (No accession number). The pottery is with Mr. Murray. (6)
