[TQ 70454987] Vicarage [NAT] Moat [NAT] (1) The Vicarage was built during the 17th c. by a member of the Warde family and stands on the site of an old moated house with water still nearly surrounding it. (2) Yalding - Cheveney. Here are the nearly complete remains of a small homestead moat, about a mile north west of Hunton Court Farm. (3) This house is now called `Warde's Moat' (authority Mr. J. H. Rakes, occupier) and no longer the vicarage. Externally it does not appear older than mid 18th c. The moat fully surrounds the house and is in excellent condition water filled. An Antiquity Model Survey has been made. (4) The occupier of the house possesses a plan (undated) prepared for John Warde. This shows the moat but no building inside it. John Warde was the vicar of Yalding from 1759-1798 and presumably built the present house, the architecture being of this period. The date given by authority 2 is therefore incorrect. (5) Published 1/2500 survey checked and correct. (6) Wardes Moat (formerly listed as the Old Vicarage). Grade II. A house of 1759-1798, formerly a vicarage, with additions of c.1880 and 20th century alterations. Built on a moated site. (7) Additional bibliography. (8-10)
