Monument details

HER Number:TQ 84 NW 63
Type of record:Monument
Name:Probable site of moated manor house, Moatenden Priory, Headcorn

Summary

Probable site of moated farmstead, owned in the early 13th century by Robert de Rokesley, seneschal to the archbishop of Canterbury. The site is thought to be located in the south-west corner of the larger later moated priory, represented by a "horseshoe" shaped moat. No trace of or substantial features were found when a bungalow was built on the site in the 1960s, therefore it is probable that the manorial buildings were of wooden construction. It is not known if the site continued to be occupied during any or part of the life of the later priory.
