The earliest charter relating to Sturry is a land grant of the villam nomine Sturigao, alio nomine dictum Cistelet in 605 by Aethelbertht to the Church of St Peter and Paul. The charter is not oringial being an 11th C copy made at the Abbey of Saint Augustine Canterbury inorder to lay claim over the whole of Sturry. The lands were granted to the Abbey in 1030 by King Cnut and remained in its hands until the dissolution in 1538.(1)
