Summary

A Romano British burial ground containing a number of inhumations and cremations located was found at Springhead on both sides of the main road during the early 20th century. Included in the finds were a female skeleton with 3rd to 4th century pottery in Winfield Bank and a male skeleton found with an iron key, south of the road, opposite Pepperhill Lane.

[TQ 62037243] Roman Cemy. [NAT] (Site of) [NAT] (1) Several burials have been recorded [at Springhead] and, since the beginning of the last century burials both by incineration and inhumation have been found in some numbers on both sides of the main road. The most recent discoveries are a woman's skeleton found with 3rd-4th c. pottery in Winfield Bank [B] and a male skeleton found with an iron key, south of the road, opposite Pepperhill Lane in 1921-2 [C]. (2) Roman pottery, skeleton and vessel of Upchurch Ware were discovered during excavations 1922/3. Sited from trace supplied by Ministry of Transport: A. TQ 61897246. Vessel of Upchurch ware found March 1922. B. TQ 61957245. Roman pottery and skeleton found April 1922. C. TQ 62137228. Skeleton found May 1922. D. TQ 62167226. Pot found May 1922. From previous experience Maidstone Museum plottings are often inaccurate and the Min. of Transport plottings have therefore been accepted.] (4)
