Holborough works was opened in 1923 by the Red Triangle Group and passed to the APCM in 1931 when it was producing 400,000 tons of clinker and 20,000 tons of hydraulic lime a year. In the 1970's the cement manufacturing side of the works was closed and the production of `Sandtex' was concentrated upon. The site was latterly oparated by Blue Circle and closed in 1984. (1) The works was set between Alsborough Road and the main line railway to which it was connected. Three principal blocks of buildings were constructed with large wash mills at their southern end.(2) The works was largely demolished soon after closure except some large silos for loading cement into railway cars which survived untilthe early 1990's. Chalk was extracted from a pit across the road where wash mills were also constructed. The pit remains in operation.
