Summary

Borstallhill windmill. A smock mill built in 1815. The mill was at first white, but in 1885, the mill was tarred, and so changed colour to black. The mill was last worked in 1905. The house was added to the mill in 1928, and it appears in one of Turner's carvings of Whitstable of 1830.

OS 6" map, 1st ed. shows Borstallhill windmill, used for flour. Still features on recent maps, but is labelled as disused from the 3rd ed. map of 1908. (23 NW and SW)(1)

A smock mill built in 1815. The mill was at first white, but in 1885, the mill was tarred, and so changed colour to black. The mill was last worked in 1905. The house was added to the mill in 1928, and it appears in one of Turner's carvings of Whitstable of 1830. (2, 3)

Historic England archive material: AA81/02104 Exterior view of Borstal Hill Mill The mill was painted white until 1885 when much of the weatherboarding was replaced and the building tarred. After this, Borstal Hill Mill became known as 'The Black Mill'. BF002604 BLACK WINDMILL, WHITSTABLE
