Summary

A number of Bronze Age mounds, ring ditches and cremations were found during work on the A253 near Monkton. The mounds and ring ditches mainly dated to the middle to late Bronze Age. The four cremation burials found in satellite locations outside the ring ditches of the barrow group were all found in urns of Deverel-Rimbury type. On the basis of this identification the burials could also be dated to the middle Bronze Age.

Area 7 of A253 Dualling, centred approx. TR 2950 6566. Contained mounds and ring ditches dating mostly to Mid-LBA. 4 satellite cremations in pots of Deveril-Rimbury type were discovered outside of the ring ditches of the barrow group. (1).

Geophysical survey carried out in 1992(2).
