[TQ 69616255] Prehistoric ring-ditch. A circular ditch, outside diameter about 100ft. No sign of post-holes or other disturbance of the natural rock inside or outside the circle. Although no trace of primary burial was found at the centre of the circle, nor any trace of a mound or bank remaining, evidence suggested that a barrow had existed from the relationship of the Saxon graves of the adjoining cemetery [TQ 66 SE 14]. Fragmentary animal bones from the S.W. side of the ditch (layer 3) included some which were suggestive of human bones, and may indicate a secondary burial. Sections yielded: In layer 5, which lay on the primary silting, a piece of rusticated pottery with finger pinching. Layer 4 contained ash, fragments of charcoal and sherd similar to but larger than that found in 5. Organic matter comes from this layer only. Layer 3, a piece of rim with small perforation. Up to this level the sherds were consistently of a Secondary Neolithic culture. Also in layer 3, a small fragment of native B.A. ware and a coarse piece of L.B.A. - E.I.A. ware. Layer 2, 9ins below the topsoil yeilded sherds from L.B.A. to Roman. [See photograph of section plan - AO/59/161/2] [Sited from plan] (1) Site quarried away. (2) The working 25in plan of the A.P.C.M., Snodland, shows the site of this ring ditch or barrow at TQ 69616257. (3) The excavations were carried out from July to September 1952 and June and July 1953. (4)
