Chislet colliery was developed from 1913 by Anglo-Westphalian Chislet Kent) Colliery Ltd, then , after the outbreak of war by North Kent Coalfield Ltd. The two shafts sunk lay at the edge of the viable coal seams, necessitating the construction of lateral working from the shaft base, extending a maximum 3 miles to the south east from the colliery. Coal working finished in the area in the 1980's. (1-3)
