A Romano-British burial group, comprising a cinerary urn containing bones with a dish for a cover, a small jar and a flagon, was exposed in October 1965 whilst removing topsoil with a mechanical excavator at the Addington Sand Pits, Addington, Kent. The machine broke away the top of the urn and the burial was found to be about 18 inches below ground level and set in a sand-filled pit in loamy soil. A subsequent excavation of the surrounding area by members of the Lower Medway Archaeological Research Group revealed a second similar burial close by. The pottery, including samian, suggested an early 2nd century date. A full report will be published in Arch. Cant. The excavator driver indicated the exact findspot of the first burial, at TQ 6475258979, which is upon a gentle south-easterly slope of farmland. (1-5)
