[Centred at TQ 60555950] Blacksole Field Site of a battle (January 28th 1554) [NAT] (1) In 1554, due to the proposed marriage of Mary and Philip of Spain, Sir Thomas Wyatt of Allington Castle, stirred up a rebellion in Kent. His followers under the command of Anthony Knyvet were defeated in Blacksole Field near Wrotham, in a fight with shots and arrows, by the sheriff's troops. The rebellion came to grief and Wyatt was executed on the 15th March, 1554.(2) Relics of the combat - swords and skull-caps - have been found in Blacksole Field.(3) Now an orchard; no further information.(4) Additional bibliography (not consulted) (5-6)
