Summary

Anglo-Saxon inhumation cemetery recorded within the vicinity of Quince Cottage, Wrotham in 1920, 1927 and 1958. Inhumations with grave goods including sceattas, brooches, beads, spearheads, rings, a pendant and knife were recovered.

The site lies at the base of the North Downs scarp, on a steep south facing slope. OD 160-170m.

[TQ 61 59] Anglo-Saxon inhumation burial with two silver sceattas. December 1954. In Maidstone Museum. (1) "Anglo-Saxon inhumation burial found at Quince Cottage, c.200 yards N. of traffic lights at junction of A.20 and Wrotham - Meopham road. 2 Anglo-Saxon Sceattas worn around neck, c. 720 A.D according to B.M. In Maidstone Museum.(2) TQ 61355958. Mrs. Richards, wife of the present owner of Quince Cottage, indicated where the burial was found; it was unearthed during the construction of a coal bunker. Sited on to the Antiquity Model.(3) TQ 616597. Inhumation burial, Wrotham, Kent. Two Anglo Saxon Sceattas from a grave at Quince Cottage, 200m north of main crossroads. Found before 1958. Both coins are pierced and very battered. They are now in Maidstone Museum. Possibly the same site, in 1920 at Bridford Platt, AS skeletons were found with an iron spearhead, a bronze ring with two beads upon it, and a bronze buckle. In 1927, the British Museum purchased a gold pendant, an inlaid circular brooch, an ear-ring, iron spearheads, a knife and a fossil ammorrite from an Anglo-Saxon grave on the chalk plateau north of Wrotham.
