[TQ 61085612] Buildings [NR] (Remains of) (1) EIA - Bastead - Fragments of gritted pottery dating from 50 BC - 50 AD have been found in Haweswood in association, it is said, with certain foundations of round stone buildings which are to be seen in the wood.(2) Remains of a circular stone building with medieval pottery and bones found 22nd March 1931.(3) A mound of earth and rubble giving no indication of buildings, c. 3 feet high, and very much overgrown.(4) 'Remains of circular stone buildings with medieaval pottery and bones, 22.3.1931'.(a) 'Possibly medieval farm buildings' (b) (5) Several mounds of earth and rubble were encountered about the siting given by auth. 1, and one circular foundation, 0.6m deep, 5.0m. in diameter, of dry stone walling was found. Also a short length of hollow way. A survey was quite impracticable on account of the denseness of the undergrowth, trees and bushes. (6) In Haw's Wood, a dense thicket, there are traces of buildings. No architectural details survive and the plans are obscured by dense undergrowth. The walling, now collapsed, would appear to have comprised dry random rubble. A.M. Survey correct. (7) Checked and correct. (8) Haws Wood. Site inspected by D Garrod, Field Officer (a) in 1979/81. Mounds and quarry areas seen together with areas of dry stone walling and one circular building, probably the one found in 1931. (9)
