Summary

Moat House was demolished in 1785, but the brick gate piers to the drive remain. Brick cellars on the suggested house site were visible in the 1930s. A map of c.1600 seems to represent this house, and shows it as containing four ranges with gables, chimneys and an extension to the east. A 'moat gate' is indicated and there is a drive to the Littlebourne Road. It is suggested that this building dates approximately from the time when Moyle Finch resided at Moat with his new wife Elizabeth Heneage in 1572.

Possible former site of Moat House. Referenced by Margaret Sparks. Moat House was demolished in 1785, but the brick gate piers to the drive remain. Brick cellars on the suggested house site were visible in the 1930s. (1) A map of c.1600 (Canterbury Cathedral Archives Map 57: Perspective: View from roughly Littlebourne showing Fordwich, Westbere, Sturry, Canterbury and Bridge, showing the boundaries of the City of Canterbury) seems to represent this house, and shows it as containing four ranges with gables, chimneys and an extension to the east. A 'moat gate' is indicated and there is a drive to the Littlebourne Road. It is suggested (2) that this building dates approximately from the time when Moyle Finch resided at Moat with his new wife Elizabeth Heneage in 1572.
