Four chalk and flint pathways were uncovered in an area north of Watling Street during excavations at Springhead. The paths appear to lead between the Roman buildings fronting Watling Street and its Branch Road and a Roman well which was in use throughout the second century. They were probably necessary because of the marshy nature of the subsoil. (1-2)
