During excavations carried out by the Museum of London Archaeology ahead of development at Swanscombe Community School, a kiln was uncovered within the walls of a Roman enclosure. this was 3.1m long with circular features at either end representing a stoke hole and kiln being linked by a flue. Infilling the kiln were flint nodules, fragments of ragstone and tile from a robbed or collapsed super structure. This was dated to the 3rd century. The stokehole and flue contained charcoal fragments. This feature has been interpreted as a corn dryer. (1-3)
