During excavations ahead of development at Springhead an area of early Bronze Age activity was identified within this a number of tree throws were identified containing occupational material dating to the early Bronze Age (Beaker period.) Three tree throws were uncovered across the area, one had largely silted by the Neolithic period but its uppermost fill suggested that it may have survived as a small hollow in the early Bronze Age. 2m to the north of this was another fairly substantial tree throw measuring 4m by 3.5m in plan and 4m in depth. Some Beaker pottery and flint were uncovered from the upper silting fills of both tree throws, generally comprising small and abraded or patinated fragments. The presence of this material in an almost fully silted up hollow indicates some level of activity in the vicinity of the Beaker pits, possibly indicative of settlement/domestic practices. (1)
