Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within property 11, which was located between the junction of Watling Street and its branch road, two shallow gullies were uncovered. The gullies were located alongside the branch road, the first was 14m in length while the second was a further 12 and was offset 1.8 m to the west, continuing to the north-west, both gullies perhaps representing fencelines. The gap between the two may have provided an entrance, and a line of stake-holes at 90° to the south-east end of the second gully possibly marked a further fence, though this did not extend as far as the roadside ditch.
