Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of Romano-British property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within property 10 on the western side of Watling Street, the bottom part of a large storage pit was uncovered within a pit. This has been interpreted as a water storage vessel. The pot which has a probable mid Roman date had been set upwright in the base of the pit. It was located 6m to the north of a well with which it may have been associated. It is likely that the storage vessel and pit may have been used in the quenching of iron objects during smithing. (1)
