Excavation at Springhead Nursery in 2002-2003 found a branch road which rand from Watling Street towards the villa site at Northfleet. It seems that Both Watling Street ant this Branch road were established at the same time. A 100m stretch of this road was identified during the excavation, it was approximately 5 m wide, with a maximum of three surviving metallings. The road had been kept clear of refuse and virtually no associated finds were recovered. The latest coins from the uppermost surviving surface dated to AD 350–360. At least part of the branch road was re-used in the medieval period, forming an element of a trackway which provided access to the springs at the head of the Ebbsfleet. Both Watling Street and this road appear to have been primary elements in the layout of the settlement in this part of Springhead. (1)
