Excavation in 2000-2002 carried out as part of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link found several inhumation burials in the ditch that enclosed the mid Roman sanctuary complex. A sequence of three individuals,
of which two were articulated both with their head towards the south-east end, and the third which was heavily disturbed were located at the northern end of the ditch, cut into its inner edge. One in this group was accompanied by a base of a jar assigned a mid-Roman date lying next to the skull, both truncated by later ploughing and erosion, whilst around the right ankle was a ring of twisted iron wire. Further to the south and within a large shallow sub oval pit, contained three neonate burials along with the redeposited remains of at least one other individual. Pottery from the fills indicates a late 2nd or early 3rd century date for both the filling of the pit and the burials. (1)
