Excavation in 2000-2002 found a a possible well or dene hole associated with the fragmentary remains of a building with an early Roman date though there is also some evidence to suggest that activity may have continued into the mid-Roman period. This had been revetted with flints around the top and contained a generally homogeneous, uncompacted fill (with some voids) which extended to a depth of at least 4 m. Pottery recovered ranged from early to mid-Roman in date, with several early–mid-Saxon sherds in the upper fill. (1)
