Excavations in advance of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link in 2002-3 identified a number of property boundaries west of the Ebbsfleet. Within Property 10 was a structure identified as a Blacksmithis workshop. The structure was represented by the insubstantial remains of two wall footings perpendicular to each other, one on the south side of chalk rubble surviving to a length of approximately 7 m, the other on the east side of flint cobbles only 2 m long. Two small slots along the north side may have held posts which supported the roof and also defined a doorway and a post-hole (16025) may have marked the location of the west side. The evidence suggests that the structure may have measured approximately 9 m by 5 m. No internal features were identified, but the remnants of a chalk surface probably represent a floor. (1)
