Summary

The Chapel of St. Mary was founded as a Chantry in the 14th cent but was subsequently demolished during the suppression of the chantries under the reigns of Henry VII and Edward VI. Whilst no remains are now thought to exist documentary evidence from a will suggests that it was located on the south side of the chancel in the present graveyard.

[Area: TQ 62604298] The Chapel of St. Mary was a separate and distinct building in the churchyard at Pembury. It was founded as a chantry by John Culpepper. temp. Edward III. The structure was thirty feet long and eighteen feet wide and roofed with lead. It was pulled down at the general suppression of chantries and no remains now exist. (1) [Sim. information] (2) [TQ 62614296] [Add. ref. to Auth 2] A reference to the chantry in a will of 1535 seems to fix the site on the south side of the chancel.Siting approximate. (3) No traces of the chapel now to be seen. The ground to the south of the chancel is covered with gravestones and gravecovers some of 18th century date.
