A Stub of a mortared wall was uncovered during a watching brief undertaken on a small service trench located just outside of the Kings Gate at Dover Castle. Its axis was uncertain from the small section which was exposed. As seen the masonry survived to a height of 0.42m and was of three courses. The bottom course of large chalk lumps represented the foundation: two courses of split greensand boulders rested on top of this. All the stonework was set in a cream gritty mortar with frequent small flint and chalk fragments. The foundation course was apparently cut into a sterile layer of stiff orange clay with chalk and flint lumps. - summarised from report (1)
