A number of Groynes are visible on later 19th and early 20th century OS maps of Dover. On the OS First Edition 8 of these groynes (which are designed to decrease erosion and drift) are visible between East Cliffe and Wellington Dock. The location and number of groynes varies on later editions, with the removal of a number of them at the western end of the waterfront and a concentration at the eastern end by the Fourth Edition. Groynes are still visible on the modern mapping, but it is likely that these are modern. (1-4)
