Numerous Capstans (rotating machines designed to multiply the pulling force of seamen when haulling ropes) are labelled on Historic OS maps dating to the end of the 19th and early 20th centuries, on land bordering Wellington Dock, Granville Dock and the tidal Harbour in Dover. The abbriviation used on the OS mapping is "Cn2" and at least 8 are visible on the Second Edition. (1-3)
