A lighthouse is visible on a number of cartographic sources dating to the mid post medieval period right through to the 20th century at the end of the South Pier, Dover. It would have been removed when the pier was extended and the train ferry dock was added in 1937. The earliest source to depict a lighthouse in this location is that produced by J. Foquet in 1737, 19th century OS maps also show it, though it has been removed by the time the Fourth Edition (1929-1952) was surveyed. (1-5)
