A saw mill is visible in this location on the first edition OS map (1865-75) by the time the second edition has been produced (1897-1900) the mill has been removed. It is possible that it is associated with the Crundall's timber yard and saw mill which is located less than 200m to the north west of this structure. It is also possible that it was the plot named 'Maison Dieu Building Yard' located on Ladywell, which was purchased by William John Adcock who was responsible for the construction of St. Pauls Catholic Church on Maison Dieu Road, Castle Mount School, part of Admiralty Pier, the military quarters at the Citadel as well as the restoration of St. James' Church.
