Large Coal yards and a coal shed are shown in this location on historic maps dating to the end of the 19th and early 20th century. The yards and shed are first visible on the Second edition OS map (1897-1900) but appear to have been removed by the time the fourth edition (1929-1952). (1-4) The shed and yards are relatively large, covering an area measuring approximately 120m in length. It is possible that these yards and shed may have been associated with the Shakespeare Colliery which was located a short distance to the south west of Dover.
