An area of the orignal, early 19th century road metalling of Centre Road on Dovers Western Heights was discovered during a watching brief undertaken during pipe trenching there in 2008. In the middle of Centre Road, the 0.24 m. thick make-up layer under the modern tarmac was different to that under Citadel Road and consisted of compact cream clay containing much flint gravel (Context 57; Fig. 13, BS 36). It seems likely that this represents one or more early metallings relating to the original Centre Road. Centre Road itself was one of the principal routes through the nineteenth century fortress, linking the main North and South Entrances. It was certainly in existence by 1813 when it was
recorded on a map of the existing works on the Heights. (1)
