A late Roman metalled surface was uncovered during rescue excavations undertaken by Kent Archaeological Rescue Unit near the former site of the Zion Chapel in the Queen Street/Last Lane area of Dover. It was sealed by sand-dunes which buried this part of Dover in the post Roman period. This sand sealed deposits of silt and soil of 2nd century date, including some deposits which may have been dumped. The fact that this metalled surface is is of a late Roman date suggests that it is associated with the Late Roman Saxon Shore Fort which was occupied between c. 270 and 330 A.D. (1-3)
