The area west of Chattenden and Lodge Hill camps was used in both World Wars for practice and experimental military trench works. The trenches are of a wide range of types including staggered types, linears, redoubts etc. These were clearly visible on aerial photographs studied in 2009-2012 during the English Heritage Hoo Landscape project.(1,2,3)
