This early Rochester chapel was confusingly, known as the Chatham Society. At this time the chapel would have been within the Kent Circuit (with included societies as far afield as Dover and Margate) and money for it was raised throughout the circuit. Brompton Chapel was built in 1789.Bethel Chapel (Rochester) was built at St Margaret’s Banks in 1810.The earliest preachers for the Rochester circuit were Richard Outen, a rope maker of Brompton; Roger Taddy who later moved to Margate and John Baxter, a shipwright who later moved to Antigua [source M5/1/B/6/2] Extracts from the minutes reveal that in 1814 the Rochester Circuit had 1090 members and included the following societies Rochester, Hogg Lane [Chatham]; Brompton, Gillingham, Sheerness, Queenborough, Eastchurch, Lower Rainham, Upchurch, Cliffe, Bush [Cuxton], Gravesend, Frindsbury.
