The Baptist church in Borstal, was started in a cottage at Cobden Place by the Zion Baptist Church, Chatham in 1849; moving to the Institute in 1881. It was re-dedicated on 19th October 1929 as the ‘Borstal Gospel Mission Church’, after the congregation bought the Institute building for £1000, this was used to build the village hall.
