Summary

Site of mill first recorded in 1647 as a fulling mill, converted to paper making c. 1687-1689 by William Harris. By the mid 19the century the mill had developed into a large complex with buildings set either side of a mill race. By 1908 the complex comprised a boiler house, engine house, salle, carpenter's shop, beating room, rolling room, drying loft and press room. The wheel was 15 feet in diameter and 9 feet wide. The Gurneys, who had bought the mill before 1851, closed paper-making operations in c.1910 and began production of patent roofing material. This venture failed and the mill was abandoned c.1913, the buildings demolished soon after.

By 1908, complex comprised boiler house, engine house, salle, carpenter's shop, beating room, rolling room, drying loft and press room. The wheel was 15' dia and 9' wide. The Gurneys, who had bought the mill before 1851, closed paper making operations closed c.1910 and production of patent roofing material from millboard commenced. This venture failed and the mill was abandoned c.1913, the buildings demolished soon after. Ruinous remains of mill buildings still to be seen in mill house gardens in 1972, most removed by 1995. Ashlar and brickwork around mill race are presumably remains of mill. (1)
