Title:Report on a Geophysical Survey of Stutfall Castle, the Roman Saxon Shore Fort at Lympne, Kent
Originator:University of Kent
Date:2016
Summary:This report presents the results from a magnetic geophysical survey at the Roman Saxon Shore Fort at Lympne, Kent (Monument No: 1005179), known locally as Stutfall Castle. The aim of the survey was to establish the extent of remaining buried archaeology, and to locate if possible, features recorded by previous work (Smith, 1850). The results have shown that features relating to the fort remain buried. However there has been strong distortion due to major land slippage. The survey re-locates the bathhouse structure identified in 1850, another building also seems to be present. No new data can add to Smith's original findings and without a more detailed survey the identification of these structures remains tentative.
