The 7 mile long single track railway was opened in July 1860 from a triangular junction 1/2 mile West of Sittingbourne, to 2 termini on Sheppey, Queenborough pier and Crossing Dock. In 1883 a new extension to a more convenient site than the Crossing Dock at Sheerness on Sea was opened. The line was electrified in 1959, and the track doubled as far as Swale Halt. Queenborough Pier has long since been dismantled.
