HER Number:MWX43703
Type of record:Monument
Name:Earthworks, including possible enclosures, Hacklinge

Summary

Earthworks, including possible enclosures, seen as cropmarks of banks and ditches, visible in 1980 and 1946, located in Hacklinge. Nine ditches and five banks were visible as cropmarks within one field. In this field a ‘Bronze Age occupation site’ (MKE7449) (NMR 468665) is known to have existed. Therefore it is possible the mapped features are the remains of the Bronze Age site. These features were partially, but not clearly, visible in 2003. Three ditches were clearly visible in 2007.

Earthworks, including possible enclosures, seen as cropmarks of banks and ditches, visible on aerial photography taken in 1980 and 1946 [1 and 2], located in Hacklinge. Nine ditches and five banks were visible as cropmarks within one field. The area measured 250 x 100m at maximum dimensions. In the N was a curvilinear ditch with a circular ditch on its concave side, visible on 1946 photography. Further S three curved ditches formed the outline of an enclosure, with its concave side to the N, which were visible on 1946 photography. Two of these ditches also joined with a curved ditch further S to suggest an enclosure cut by the field boundary, which may have continued to the E, this was also visible on the 1946 photography. Two circular banks were located in the centre of the field with two linear banks to the S which were orientated WSW-ENE; these were seen on the 1980 photography. To the S was a curved ditch which almost formed a right angle, this was visible on the 1980 aerial photography.

In this field a ‘Bronze Age occupation site’ (MKE7449) (NMR 468665) is known to have existed. Therefore it is possible the mapped features are the remains of the Bronze Age site; however the report for the investigation represented by the stated records would need to be consulted to determine this.

These features were partially, but not clearly, visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [3 and 4]. The N circular ditch and two ditches in the middle of the field were clearly visible on Next Perspectives photography taken in 2007 [5 and 6].

Located to the N and W was an area of former field boundaries (MWX43704). To the SE were cropmarks and enclosures (MWX43702) and former field boundaries (MWX43701).

A transcription of the features recorded from aerial photographs exists within a GIS layer held by this HER.
