Summary

WWII pillbox and associated structures visible in 1942 and 1943, located along the beach at Walmer. The pillbox measured 5.4m in diameter, thought its shape could not be accurately discerned. To the N lay two small structures roughly 4m in diameter, which may also have been pillboxes. To the SW lay a square structure measuring 2.5m. These features were placed between 37m and 130m W of the high water mark. Three of the features were only faintly visible in 1946 and the SW square structure was not visible. Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 showed all the features to be absent.

WWII pillbox and associated structures visible on aerial photography taken in 1942 and 1943 [1 and 2], located along the beach at Walmer. The pillbox measured 5.4m in diameter, thought its shape could not be accurately discerned. To the N lay two small structures roughly 4m in diameter, which may also have been pillboxes. To the SW lay a square structure measuring 2.5m. These features were placed between 37m and 130m W of the high water mark. Three of the features were only faintly visible on aerial photography taken in 1946 [3] and the SW square structure was not visible. Next Perspectives photography taken in 2003 [4] showed all the features to be absent.

These features lay atop an area of WWII barbed wire (MWX43647) and lines of WWII beach scaffolding (MWX43629). A WWII pier lay 100m to the SE (MWX43663).

This site may be represented in the National Monuments Record by the record ‘Second World War reinforced concrete pillbox [Sector 6]. East of Walmer.’ (1428663).
